Stephen “Steve” J. Schuler, 72, passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 15, 1952 to the late John and Patricia (Nielsen) Schuler in Janesville and graduated in 1970 from Craig High School in Janesville. Steve began his working career at Rollin Pin Bakery in Janesville until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in June of 1972. He served six and a half years and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant E-6. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, Fort Bragg, NC, and spent his final 3 years in Neu Ulm Germany where his son James was born. Steve was awarded Cook of the year at Fort Bragg and also Soldier of the month at Fort Leonard Wood. After his tour of duty, Steve returned to school where he earned a Bachelor of Business degree from the University of Whitewater. Steve next worked at the Parker Pen Company as a Computer Systems Analyst and then as a Production Control Supervisor until 1993. His proudest achievement was being an owner and furniture designer with his family business at Country Furniture by Schulers until his retirement in 2013. Steve married Laury Popp in 1999. Outside of work Steve enjoyed fishing, camping, antiquing, and vegetable gardening. He was an avid bowler and golfer, and was a proud Packers, Brewers, and Badgers fan. Steve was always a great mentor and coach. While in Germany he coached his little league team for 3 years being one game short of reaching the Little League World Series in Ohio. Steve coached the Parker Pen women’s softball team to a city title. He also served as the Cub Scout pack master at Washington School in Janesville. Steve was a 45 year member of American Legion Post # 205 in Janesville. Steve’s greatest trait was his kind heart. He was a man who would give the shirt off his back with no questions asked. Steve is survived by his loving wife Laury, his son James (Laura) Schuler, his daughter Jennifer (Weeks) Schuler; The mother of his children, Rita Simonson; his brother Michael (Laura) Schuler, and sister Cheryl Peterson; Step-son Eric (Katie) Popp. Nieces and nephews: Jessica Schuler, Stephanie (Schuler) Messerly, Casey (Peterson) Dereszinsky, Cody Peterson, Greta Schuler, Betsy (Cook) Tate, Chandler (Cook) Duffy and Jack Jorgensen; grandsons Bodie Weeks and Emmett Popp and granddaughter Morgan Popp. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Pat Schuler and his brother Daniel.
A Celebration of Steve’s life and luncheon will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 10th in the Oak Hill Cemetery Chapel, 1725 N. Washington Street, Janesville, WI 53548.
Steve will be receiving a veteran’s memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday September 10, 2024 at the Oak Hill Cemetery Chapel, 1725 N. Washington Street, Janesville WI 53548.
