Ronald (Ron) Lee Mathews of Janesville passed away at Mercy Hospital on Monday, April 14, 2025. He was 84 years old. Ronald was born in Janesville on November 5, 1940, the son of John and Beverly (Quinn) Mathews. Ron was a Janesville resident most of his life, and a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a Top Security Morse Code Operator.
Ron was a Professional Painter for more than 25 years, and worked in building maintenance the last few years leading up to retirement. Ron loved music, history, and nature; and enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, dancing, singing, playing guitar, writing music, and being social whenever possible. Ron will be most remembered for his great intelligence and never-ending wise cracking sense of humor, even to the very end, as well as his immense love for his family. Ron fought to live longer than anyone thought possible, so he could know and create special memories with his great granddaughter, Hazel, who brought him the greatest joy in his final years. He sang his final song, especially for her, just days before passing-one he often sang for his children and grandchildren over the years as well.
Ronald Mathews is survived by his children: Heidi Van Kirk, Angela (Angie) Mathews, Ronald “Chip” Mathews Jr.; stepchildren, Robert (Jessica) Conroy, Susan (Michael) Stockel; cherished grandchildren, Micaela (Zachary) Miller, Kendyl Van Kirk, Aaron Mathews; great-granddaughter, Hazel Miller; former wife and dear friend, Carol Govier; brother, William (Jean) Mathews; sister, Cindi Mathews. He was preceded in death by both parents, brother, Jerry Mathews and stepson, Ray Conroy.
Funeral services will be held at Noon on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at HENKE-CLARSON FUNERAL HOME, 1010 N. Wright Road, Janesville. Rev. Lee Meissner will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery with military rites by Kienow-Hilt V.F.W. Post # 1621.
