Michael James Reid, “Mike” age 76 of Janesville, WI passed away at his home on July 1, 2024. He was born in Belvidere, IL on March 31, 1948, the son of Clarence Reid Jr. and Margaret (McKeown) Reid. He grew up and went to school in Belvidere, IL. Mike loved sports and earned letters in football, basketball, and baseball, while attending Belvedere High. Michael attended Carthage College where he was a member of the basketball team for one year. He then attended Northern Illinois University where he was a member of the golf team, and Tau Lambda Chi fraternity.
Mike entered the U. S Army on March 31, 1970, his 22nd birthday. He served in Vietnam in the fourth infantry Division-Charlie Company, the Americal Division-Alpha Company, and the 197th Infantry Division-Alpha Company. He received various medals and commendations including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, a Bronze Star Medal, and several others. Mike’s experience in Vietnam had a major impact on his life and shaped the man he became. Mike was employed by Roadway Express for 25 years where he was a terminal manager and a sales manager. He earned service awards while at Roadway for outstanding sales and terminal management. After his retirement Mike worked for Crown Golf at the Riverside Golf Course in Janesville, WI until 2011, when he moved to Mount Juliet, TN with his wife Terri. Mike and Terri returned to Janesville in 2019 to be with the family they missed so much.
Mike will always be remembered as an avid golfer. He was a member of the Riverside Men’s Golf Association and a member of the Janesville Sunday Sixteen Golf group, the PGA and the WSGA. He participated in countless golf tournaments and charities. He was a winner of the Janesville city senior tournament in 2003, and the Janesville city men’s tournament in 2008. He had nine holes in one during his lifetime. His other passions included fishing with his children and grandchildren and hunting pheasants with his sons, grandsons and his favorite grand-dog labs, Boomer and Bodie.
More than anything else, Mike found immense joy in his family, particularly his beloved grandchildren. He loved each of his children as individuals and taught them to be strong. Mike was fiercely protective as a husband, father and grandfather and he faced life’s challenges with courage and optimism.
Michael is survived by his wife, Theresa Marie (Schultz) Reid whom he partnered with in 1988 and later married in November 2009; children Michael James (Maura) Reid II, Karlye Lynn Reid, Justin James (Amanda Stone) Reid, Jonathan Charles (Miranda Marie) Ferraro, Christopher Michael (Carlee Smith) Ferraro; grandchildren Jesse James Reid, Jaxson James Reid, Samuel James Reid, Arianna Marie Ferraro, Jada Price and his grand-dog Bodie. He was preceded in death by his parents, his only brother Gregory Reid, aunts, uncles, cousins, and his grand-dog Boomer.
The family would like to thank the wonderful people at the Veterans Administration, Mercy Hospice, and Home Instead for their support, kindness, and assistance in Michael’s care. No words can adequately describe our gratitude.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday July 13, 2024, at HENKE-CLARSON FUNERAL HOME, 1010 N. Wright Road, Janesville with a time of sharing at 11 a.m. A procession will follow to Milton Lawns Memorial Park where military rites will be conducted followed by entombment in Milton Lawns Mausoleum.
