Lois Mae Baes

February 17, 1926 — January 3, 2024

Lois Mae Baes, age 97, a life-long Janesville resident, passed away at Rock Haven Nursing Home on Wednesday night, January 3, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was born in Janesville on February 17, 1926, the daughter of Ivan and Anna (Nelson) Bernard. She was a graduate of Janesville High School. During World War II, Lois was a “Rosie the Riveter” at Fairbanks-Morse Company in Beloit.


Lois married George Baes on May 24, 1947. She was employed for a short time at Hough Shade Company (Hufcor) but once the Baes daughters were born, George wished for Lois to be at home where she was a homemaker and stay-at-home mom.

Lois was very active as a volunteer for with 4-H and was a poll worker. She was an active member of First Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the women’s circles and active with Stephen’s Ministry.


Lois was well known and respected as a dog trainer, breeder and a judge for dog shows including the Westminster Dog Show.


Lois Baes is survived by her daughters, Phyllis (Bruce) Bender of Papillion, NE and Peggy Nimmo of Janesville; granddaughters, Stephanie Monson and Stacey (John) Haight; great-grandchildren, J T Haight and Gabby Monson; brother, Allen (Donna) Bernard; nieces and nephews including a special niece, Linda (Ken) Olander.


Lois was preceded in death by her husband, George on April 1, 2017. Her parents Ivan and Anna Bernard also preceded her in death as well as her brother, Charles Bernard and her sister, Joan Utzig


Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2024, in the Chapel at FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH, 612 North Randall Avenue, Janesville. Rev. James Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be at the CHURCH on Saturday, January 6th from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Private interment will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Park.
