Charles Harrison Smith

Charles Harrison Smith, 94, of Janesville passed away on May 9, 2024 at Cedar Crest. He was born at home on June 23, 1929 in Janesville, WI, the son of Maurice W. and Lorene E. Smith. Chuck graduated from Janesville High School in 1949. He married Carol Fay Christenson on September 29, 1951 in Janesville.


Over the course of his life, Chuck had been a professional photographer, a metallurgist at Fairbanks Morris and Beloit Corporation and a salesman for Manley Bros. Silica. He was an officer in the American Foundrymen's Society and a major contributor to their scholarship fund at UW-Platteville. Chuck was an avid reader and a master of many subjects and talents. He enjoyed trivia contests that challenged his thinking skills. He designed and oversaw the construction of both of his family’s homes. He loved woodworking, especially with hand tools and created furniture for his family. Chuck enjoyed cooking and was well known for his meatloaf, and handmade caramels and fudge at Christmas. A steadfast Christian, he was an active member at First Lutheran Church. He was also a long time member of the Janesville Elks Club. Chuck loved his long walks with his dogs and was involved in Airedale Terrier Rescue and Adoption. Not one to sit idle, when he retired Chuck was a valued volunteer at the Rotary Gardens, the Rock County Historical Society, the Tallman House, and the Janesville Visitor Information Center. He earned recognition for being the Volunteer of the Year.


Chuck was a beloved family man. He took pride in the achievements of his children and grandchildren and loved his wife with all his heart. Survivors include his wife of more than 72 years, Carol; his son Peter and his wife Aimee Smith of Janesville, WI; his daughter Pam and her husband Fred Rowe of Clarksville, MD; and grandchildren, David and Martha Rowe and Beca and Lydia Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother John E. Smith.


A graveside service is scheduled for Monday, June 17th at 10:30 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Pastor Mueller of First Lutheran Church presiding. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a contribution to a charity of your choice in his name. Henke-Clarson Funeral Home assisted the family.
